About Justin

Justin Martin is a law student whose research interests include civil rights law, election law, American political history, and the intersection of legal advocacy and community organizing. His work is particularly focused on the intersection of historical scholarship, contemporary voting rights litigation, and grassroots political mobilization. His historical research examines independent, Black-led multiracial political parties from the 1940s to 1970s, their legal and political strategies on voting rights, redistricting, and political power building, and their transformative effect on the American political system. He has published and lectured on the history of the American Civil Rights Movement.

Before law school, Martin earned his M.A. in History and B.A.s in African & African American Studies and Political Science from LSU. While at LSU, he served as Speaker of the Student Senate, President of the Society of African and African American Studies (SAAAS), Vice President of the Graduate Student Association (GSA), and Secretary and Education Committee Chair for the NAACP chapter. He was a Leadership LSU 2022 cohort member, recipient of the 2023 Happy Award for outstanding contributions to service learning, and AAAS Changemaker award winner.

Martin worked as an organizer for various local and national non-profits focused on community development before pursuing higher education. He is passionate about bridging the gap between academic scholarship and community engagement, having served as a Graduate Scholar in the LSU Center for Community Engagement, Leadership, and Learning. He plans to pursue a career in public service that combines historical scholarship and legal advocacy to advance democratic participation and civil rights.
